The inaugural Sydney 300 has been run and won for 2019. Matt Shylan from the E36 Race Series shares his thoughts about the weekend in the RHD BMW 318is prepared by AHM Motorsport.

After a tough first day where we encountered very little running time due to an ECU issue which forced us to sit out both practice sessions, we bounced back to grab a Class P2 starting position in a very slippery wet qually session, especially straight after 1 hour of running from the 2 stroke super karts.

Race day was hot, Adam bedded in some new Intima brake pads for the race during the practice session and managed to log his first laps of the weekend.

I started the race and the car wasn’t great setup wise after missing crucial track time, but we persisted and ran consistent lap times, we dropped back to 4th or 5th but managed to maintain the same pace whilst everyone else fell off the cliff in the heat, after a 46 lap stint in the 35+ degree heat, we had worked our way back to 2nd.

My left boot was actually starting to melt and I have some burns on the left side of my left foot. Unfortunately a call to pit on lap 46 came 2 laps to early as a safety car was called which would've meant we jumped to P1 in class, but a great stop was executed by the team and Adam jumped in and drove it home maintaining a lap lead over 3rd place despite a broken exhaust sending some nasty vibration through the car.

It was a pleasure racing with everyone from the E36 Race Series and the cars are easy to drive and are a lot of fun. Having won state hillclimb championships, podiums in the state super sprint series, 3 class 300's and finishing 2nd outright in the 2015 Australian Endurance Championship, a 3rd in class at the inaugural Bathurst 6 hour and 4th outright in the 2014 NSW Production Touring Car Championship and multiple podiums in the production car endurance and sprint races, this was a very rewarding race weekend!

I would like to thank all the competitors and the officials for great driving standards and enduring the heat! A special thanks goes to the very welcoming friendly gang in the E36 Race Series for making us welcome. Thanks to Adam and the team for having me on board! Thanks to my amazing friends, family and sponsors: Liqui-Moly Australia, Intima Performance Brake Pads, DBA Brakes, Whiteline, Molecule Australia, Xtreme Clutch, K&N Filters, Shockwavesigns and Shylan Motorsport Services.

Thanks Matt for your race report, it's great the see the E36 Race Series cars mixing it up with many different makes and holding their own. I'd like to personally thank Ben Halcomb from 7Chairs Photography for the amazing photos taken on the day, I'll upload more shots into a gallery on the website shortly.
